An independent, coeducational college-preparatory school in Pasadena, Calif., Polytechnic School offers a broad curriculum in the liberal arts for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Founded in 1907, the school enrolls approximately 860 students from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.

Position: Upper School debate coach


Polytechnic School is looking for an experienced and dynamic debate coach who will have the responsibility of leading our parliamentary and policy debate programs. He or she will be joining a division that values collegiality, espouses the highest standards, and provides mutual support and collaboration. The successful candidate will take a student-centered approach to all school work and will use the school’s mission to design and support the academic, extracurricular, social, and emotional success of students.

Our next debate coach will provide debate instruction to individual students, to pairs, and to the team as a whole. The coach will provide administrative support for the team, including coordination of travel logistics, communication with families, and structure and deadlines for appropriate student progress. The coach will lead all debate practices and should be prepared to chaperone students and travel to the weekend debate tournaments. 


  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Competitive debate experience;
  • Experience working with adolescents;
  • Ability to design and run debate practices with an emphasis on argumentation skills;
  • Ability to work with additional colleagues;
  • Experience communicating with multiple constituencies.

Additional job requirements

  • Driver’s license and insurance;
  • Ability to drive school van.

Physical requirements and work environment

  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment;
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
