Reporting directly to the K-8 Director, the Middle School Dean of Students responds to routine disciplinary issues and supports parents and students in understanding and upholding New Roads core values. The Dean is also responsible for ensuring New Roads commitment to the whole person as well as overseeing, developing, and evaluating the co-curricular program that is intentionally aligned with the philosophy of New Roads and academic program as well as collaborating with faculty to foster a learning environment that promotes the recognition, appreciation, and encouragement of each persons full and unique human potential.

  • Handle routine disciplinary issues, following up with teachers and parents when necessary and determining disciplinary consequence. Assign staff to supervise detention.
  • Develop, in collaboration with Leadership Team, and oversee the development of the advisory program and training of the advisors.
  • Document student disciplinary action and determine with K-8 Director students to be placed on Academic and Behavior Warning and Probation.
  • Run Roll Call.
  • Work to develop student leadership.
  • Meet with all 6th grade and new students and their families prior to start of school year, planning electives, hearing concerns, and becoming familiar with the student's needs. Sharing pertinent information with various people in the school to coordinate and plan to support student.
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of the Orientation Program, Grade-level objectives, and Co-Curricular Programs, including goal-setting, electives, study halls, workshops, service learning, and community service within the Framework of New Roads philosophy. Supporting teachers in developing electives and workshops and approving them.
  • Work with Middle School psychologist, K-8 Director, and teachers to approve curriculum and topics for council and respond to issues that emerge during council.
  • Building and approve student schedules and program.
  • Create special schedules.
  • Coordinate for any students with learning differences who are requesting accommodations.
  • Monitor students with special needs. Communicate information regarding care and areas of concern and create a plan with teachers for addressing students needs. Coordinate with the spectrum teachers to support students in the program and to integrate services into the middle school.
  • Foster a class identity and community within and across classes.
  • Monitor student behavior during the day: checking on noise in the hallway, helping with supervision and being a presence on campus.
  • Develop student leadership to run Town Hall meeting and transform it into a student-centered space that highlights students talents, classroom work, and unique voices and that "promote[s] personal, social, political, cultural and moral understanding, instill[s] respect for the life and ecology of the earth, and foster[s] the sensitivity to embrace life's deep joys and mysteries.
  • Coordinate portfolio week.
  • Approve field trips.
  • Arrange and approve speakers and field trips per teacher request or when opportunities arise.
  • Create and oversee diagnostics for the beginning (and ending) of the school year to place students in the appropriate level of instruction.
  • Identify student speakers, writers and performers, coordinating with the Music department regarding the musical performance at 8th grade culmination, and work with 8th grade student speakers on writing and practicing their speeches.
  • Coordinate ACT Aspire testing, arranging schedules and supplies, as well as coordinating for students with special needs.
  • Lead committee in researching and selecting all school summer reading book and plan curriculum around this book and the main topic for the first few days of school.
  • Organize, schedule and facilitate special events, such as all MS potluck, Pi day, MS dance, etc.



  • Create the agenda for faculty meetings.
  • Lead grade-level team meetings
  • Assign faculty duties outside of their core academic courses, including lunch supervision.
  • Create faculty schedules and monitor equity of assignments and workload.
  • Hire, evaluate, and staff Co-curricular programs.
  • Coordinate with various teachers/students at the ES/HS for cross-campus opportunities.
  • Design plan with teachers for students who need more support.
  • Lead grade-level meetings.



  • Articulate school policies to parents.
  • Coordinate information and communication with the Parent Association reps; attend PA meetings on occasion.
  • Develop grade-level topics for parent evening at each grade level.
  • Partner with parents in developing students holistically.
  • Support students in advocating for themselves and working effectively with their teachers.



  • Assist the K-8 Director in setting and implementing strategic goals for the Middle School.
  • Serve on the Middle School Leadership Team.
  • Orient student, parents, and faculty to the New Roads culture and values.
  • Keep the K-8 Director informed of student issues and all other matters relevant to school life.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by K-8 Director.


  • Bachelor degree in Education or related field required
  • Minimum of 5+ years experience (including 2+ years teaching)
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Strong collaboration skills

  • Understanding of and commitment to motivating students in ways appropriate to their diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
