Dean of Student Life

This opening calls for specific administration qualifications set by the school.

CalWest's client school in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area seeks a Dean of Student Life to start in July 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in a collaborative employee culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK - 12th grade education. 
  • Meet weekly with Grade-Level Team Leads, grade level teams, Student Support team, leadership, and Head of Middle School 
  • Meet with Grade-level teaching and advising teams as necessary to discuss student concerns and MS planning for events, assemblies and potential speakers 
  • Plan and execute Outdoor Education in partnership with Grade level Team Leads and Head of MS 
  • Develop and implement systems that are developmentally appropriate, student growth-oriented, school values-aligned, and complementary to Developmental Designs classroom practices for responding to behavior and disciplinary concerns, including:  
  • Logical student consequences for infractions 
  • Structures to encourage student growth and learning from mistakes 
  • Parent communication from start to finish 
  • Documentation and follow-up from and for faculty 
  • Work with all faculty, especially advisors and the DEI+JA team, to support consistent and equitable implementation of student structures 
  • Support advisors and Grade-Level Team Leads in being a “first responder” to disciplinary infractions 
  • Support advisors and Grade-Level Team Leads in communicating with and meeting with families about serious or persistent behavioral concerns 
  • Stay abreast of best practices regarding student culture, discipline, and behavior and share such learning with senior leaders and faculty 
  • Develop vision for, and work with faculty to implement, initiatives to further cultivate a positive school climate and healthy student culture 
  • Coordinate teacher duties, parent conferences, office hours, club time, calendaring, dances, on and off campus events 
  • Coach faculty in classroom management and student facing responsibility 
  • Serve as thought partner and co-planner with Middle School faculty and Middle School Leadership Team on programming and structures that would contribute positively to student life 

Qualifications

  • Desire and ability to work in a collegial, highly collaborative environment 
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse, dynamic, and progressive school community 
  • Experience in counseling and/or restorative justice processes is preferred 
  • A commitment to anti-racism and demonstrated skill designing equitable and inclusive educational experiences and learning environments that incorporate themes of diversity and justice 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education is preferred/required
