Position: Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Reports to: Head of Middle School

FLSA: Exempt


The Middle School Social Studies Teacher is a member of the full time faculty, responsible for instructing students in grades 5 through 8. Current courses delivered by the Middle School History Department include US History, World History 1 and 2 and Global Studies. The Upper School Social Studies Teacher is tasked with creating a flexible and dynamic social studies classroom environment and program favorable to learning and personal growth for highly gifted children; establishing effective rapport with students, parents, and colleagues; nurturing passions and talents of students; developing each child’s skills, attitudes and knowledge needed in a strong foundation for social studies education in accordance with each student’s ability; collaborating and partnering with colleagues and administration to build, assess, and integrate curriculum across disciplines; fostering student success and well-being beyond their classroom.


  • Plan, prepare and deliver classroom social studies lessons, activities and materials for students under the overall guidance of the Head of the Middle School, Department Chair, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction
  • Provide differentiated instruction for multiple learning styles and ability levels
  • Provide a positive and creative educational climate for students to learn in
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals
  • Observe and evaluate student academic and social progress, submit grades and report cards in a timely manner according to the established procedures of the school
  • Accurately complete any required reports requested by school
  • Demonstrate excellent communications and collaborative skills to work with other teachers and instructional partners throughout all grade levels to strengthen community and student experience
  • Writing thorough personal/academic recommendations for students as they matriculate to new schools
  • Maintain up-to-date curriculum documentation through Atlas platform
  • Utilize creative learning aids and advancing technological tools provided by the school
  • Demonstrates culturally competent skills in educational program design and delivery
  • Support the overall social and emotional well-being of students
  • Abide by and uphold the policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school
  • Demonstrate social skills necessary to manage positive and productive interactions with students, parents, school administration and staff
  • Participate in and support school community activities, programs, and initiatives
  • Participate in meetings and professional development activities
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment that assures the well-being of students
  • Able to meet the normal hours of work and attendance necessary to provide instruction to students


  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from a four-year college or university
  • Master’s degree in education preferred
  • 3-5 years of successful teaching as a lead teacher
  • Independent school experience preferred
  • Experience with working with gifted children preferred
  • Appropriately credentialed
  • Able to pass state and federal background checks
  • Clear TB and criminal background check upon hire
  • Experience working with advanced elementary and/or middle school social studies.
