Job Summary:

The Lower School Spanish Teacher is a member of the full time faculty, responsible for instructing students in grades K through 4. The position provides elementary Spanish instruction to gifted students using best teaching strategies; establish effective rapport with students, parents, and colleagues; nurture passions and talents of students; develop each child’s skills, attitudes and knowledge needed in a strong foundation for elementary grade education in accordance with each student’s ability; collaborate and partner with colleagues and administration to build, assess, and integrate curriculum across disciplines; foster student success and well-being beyond their classroom.


  • Plan, prepare and deliver creative, dynamic classroom Spanish lessons, activities and materials for gifted students under the overall guidance of the Head of the Lower School, Department Chair, and Upper School Spanish teacher.
  • Provide coaching on an individual basis.
  • Provide a positive and creative educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Observe and evaluate student academic and social progress, timely submit grades and report cards according to the established procedures of the school.
  • Accurately complete any required reports requested by school.
  • Demonstrate excellent communications and collaborative skills to work with other teachers and instructional aides throughout all grade levels to strengthen community and student experience.
  • Utilize creative learning aids and advancing technological tools provided by the school.
  • Abide by and uphold the policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school.
  • Demonstrate social skills necessary to manage positive and productive interactions with students, parents, school administration and staff.
  • Participate in and support school community activities, programs, and initiatives.
  • Participate in meetings and professional development activities.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment that assures the well-being of students.
  • Ability to meet the normal hours of work and attendance necessary to provide instruction to students.



  • CA teaching credential (preferred).
  • Advanced or superior Spanish language proficiency.
  • Experience teaching Spanish at the elementary level.
  • Experience teaching lower-elementary students.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL proficiency guidelines and standards.
  • Knowledge of strategies and current best language teaching practices and second language acquisition theory.
  • Strong understanding of independent school methods and ability to effectively integrate best practices of NAIS and CAIS.
  • Able to pass state and federal background checks and have clear TB results upon hire.
  • Understanding of the academic, social, and emotional development of highly gifted children. Experience in an independent school and/or gifted school preferred.
  • Understanding and use of multiple forms of assessment in informing and driving instructions.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, creativity, and a high degree of self-direction and flexibility.
  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-through skills.

  • In-person attendance and promptness necessary to provide an effective level of instruction and other necessary assistance to faculty and students during normal school hours.

  • Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities with average interior dust with occasional exposure to outdoor elements.
  • Exposure to a normal school environment that is usually quiet but sometimes noisy.
  • Ability to sit, stand, move, communicate, hear and read during the course of normal teaching activities.
  • Able to use computers and other teaching tools.
  • Ability to think and concentrate for sustained periods of time.
