Director of Performing Arts

This opening calls for specific teaching qualifications set by the school.

CalWest's client school in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area is seeking a Director of Performing Arts to start in August 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in a collaborative employee culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK - 12th grade education. 
  • Reports to Head MS and US 
  • Teaches two 7-8th grade elective classes 4x per week year-round, possibly including Show Choir, Music, Chorus, Drama  
  • Teaches a rotation of music classes to 5th & 6th graders equivalent to one 4-block class year-round 
  • Directs one major performance each season (Fall, Winter, Spring), including one middle school focused production, one mixed upper & middle school production, and one upper school focused production 
  • Teaches Upper School year-round “Exploratory” classes to students who self-select into the courses. These change quarterly and might span a range of music, singing, and drama to be determined with candidate  
  • Produce small scale exhibitions/performances from taught middle and upper school classes, roughly once per quarter, for example, students in a middle school choir elective sing at an all school assembly or event 
  • Teaches one 10th Grade Fall Immersive 
  • Lead middle school lunch club & afterschool opp for LS or MS (Drama) 
  • Coordinates theater/events in JK-12 
  • Works collaboratively with division heads to determine the use of budget to support music, choral, and theater elements of the department 

Qualifications

  • Desire and ability to work in a collegial, highly collaborative environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students across middle and upper school in choir, performance, and music related classes and performances 
  • Demonstrated ability to produce musical performances and to direct a team of supporting adults toward a shared vision and execution of the show 
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse, dynamic, and progressive school community 
  • A commitment to anti-racism and demonstrated skill in designing equitable and inclusive educational experiences and learning environments that incorporate themes of diversity and justice 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts or related field preferred
